Movie Capsules by Barry Epstein– Sept. 24, 2010 Playing at the Cinemark, Muvico, Regal & Sunrise Cinemas

The Tillman Story ***1/2
Drama and Documentary. Pat Tillman gave up his professional football career to join the Army Rangers in 2002 -- and became an instant symbol of patriotic fervor and unflinching duty. But the truth about Pat Tillman is far more complex, and ultimately far more heroic, than the caricature created by the media. And, when the government tried to turn his death into propaganda, they took on the wrong family. From her home in Santa Cruz mountains, Pat's mother, Dannie Tillman, led the family's crusade to reveal the truth beneath the mythology of their son's life and death. "The Tillman Story" not only shines a light on the shady aftermath of Pat's death and calls to task the entire chain of command but also examines themes as timeless as the notion of heroism itself. R 97 minutes. Three and a half stars

Wall Street Money Never Sleeps ***
Drama and Sequel. Emerging from a lengthy prison stint, Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) finds himself on the outside of a world he once dominated. Looking to repair his damaged relationship with his daughter, Gekko forms an alliance with her fiance Jacob (Shia LaBeouf), and Jacob begins to see him as a father figure. But Jacob learns the hard way that Gekko -- still a master manipulator and player -- is after something very different from redemption. PG-13 133 minutes. Three stars

Bran Nue Dae ***
Comedy, Musical/Performing Arts and Adaptation. A coming of age musical tale set in northwest Australia celebrating family, forgiveness, and aboriginal reconciliation. It is the summer of 1969 and young Willie is filled with an idyllic life in his hometown port of Broome. Down on his luck he meets an old man, who he calls 'Uncle' Tadpole, and together they con a couple of hippies, Annie and Slippery, into taking them on a life-changing 3,000 mile journey through the spectacular Australian outback. PG-13 85 minutes Three stars

The Duel ** ½
The great plays of Chekhov are endlessly revived, but there are precious few adaptations, either theatrical or cinematic, of his many and far less celebrated stories and novellas. The rather ungainly titled "Anton Chekhov's the Duel" demonstrates that there's a wealth of material yet to be explored. The film is receiving its world theatrical premiere at New York's Film Forum. Directed by Dover Kosashvili, the Israeli filmmaker who made an auspicious debut with the terrific "Late Marriage" (2001), the English-language film features a largely Irish cast. Two and a half stars.

You Again *
Comedy. Successful PR pro Marni (Kristen Bell) heads home for her older brother's wedding and discovers that he's marrying her high school arch nemesis, who's conveniently forgotten all the rotten things she did so many years ago. Then the bride's jet-setting aunt (Sigourney Weaver) bursts in and Marni's not-so-jet-setting mom (Jamie Lee Curtis) comes face to face with her own high school rival. PG 105 minutes One star

The Virginity Hit ½
One teen's quest to lose his virginity is broadcast on the internet for the entire world to see in this comedy from producers Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. Matt always wanted his first time to be special, then his plan to lose his virginity with longtime girlfriend Nicole goes went horribly awry. Unfortunately for Matt, his friends were videotaping the entire thing, and before long the clip goes viral. Embarrassed and heartbroken, Matt finds his luck turning around when a pretty online admirer offers to be his first. But her offer comes with a list of stipulations, and as Matt prepares to take the plunge, his pals keep the camera rolling to catch every painfully awkward moment of his transition into manhood. R 126 minutes one half star

Movie Capsules by Barry Epstein– Sept. 17, 2010 Playing at the Cinemark, Muvico, Regal & Sunrise Cinemas

Life During Wartime ***
Controversial filmmaker Todd Solondz returns with this quasi-follow up to 1998's Happiness with this Werc Werk Works production, centering on a group of intertwining love stories with Allison Janney, Michael Lerner, Renee Taylor Ally Sheely and Paul (Peewee Herman) Reubens. Separated from her incarcerated husband Bill (Hinds), Trish (Janney) is about to be married again. Bill is a pedophile, so Trish couldn't be more excited to have Harvey (Lerner), a "normal" father figure for her two sons. But when Bill is released from prison and the boys finally meet their future stepdad, the family is forced to decide whether to forgive or to forget. Trish's sister, the virginal, angelic Joy (Henderson), is also haunted by ghosts of lovers past. On leave from her degenerate husband, Allen (Williams), and her job at a New Jersey correctional facility, Joy unwittingly leaves behind a trail of shame and exposed secrets wherever she goes. In one of the film's most stylized sequences, the image of Joy walking the dark streets of Miami in her nightgown maintains her innocence against a backdrop of self-affliction and desire. R 1 hour 36 minutes. Three stars

The Town ***
Drama. Ben Affleck directs and stars. Doug MacRay is an unrepentant criminal, the de facto leader of a group of ruthless bank robbers who pride themselves in stealing what they want and getting out clean. But that all changed on the latest job, when they briefly took a hostage, bank manager Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall). They let her go unharmed, but sometime later she meets an unassuming and rather charming man named Doug, not realizing that he is the same man who only days earlier had terrorized her. R 125 minutes. Three stars

Movie Capsules by Barry Epstein Sept. 10, 2010 Playing at the Cinemark, Muvico, Regal & Sunrise Cinemas

Farewell ***1/2
An espionage agent begins working against his own country for the good of the world in this drama based on a true story. Sergei Grigoriev (Emir Kusturica) is a Soviet intelligence operative who has become deeply disillusioned with life under Communism -- while he believes in the ideals the U.S.S.R was founded upon, he feels they have been become hopelessly compromised by their current leadership, and that the old government must be brought down for the sake of future generations. With this in mind, Grigoriev strikes up a friendship with Pierre Froment (Guillaume Canet), a French engineer who is living and working in Moscow and has no idea his new pal is a spy. Once Grigoriev has gained Froment's confidence, he begins passing classified documents along to Froment with the understanding that they will then be forwarded to French intelligence. It soon becomes clear that what Grigoriev has to share are American state secrets and classified scientific documents confirming the KGB has been digging deep into U.S. security; when the CIA finds out just how much the Russians know, it sparks an international incident and fierce reprisals against the U.S.S.R. Directed by Christian Carion, L'Affaire Farewell (aka Farewell) was based on the true story of KGB agent Vladimir Vetrov; the film also stars Fred Ward, Willem Dafoe and David Soul. R 1 hour 53 minutes Three and a half stars

Restrepo ***
It is fairly extraordinary that this film exists. The level of access attained by Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger over their 15-month period embedded with the Second Platoon, Battle Company, 173rd Airborne Brigade allows for an incredibly unvarnished account -- including footage of deaths both civilian and military. It's perhaps the most intimate and unflinching examination yet of the processes of modern warfare -- and an exhilarating, heartrending, profoundly moving film in its own right. R 96 minutes 3 stars

Flipped ** 1/2
When second-graders Bryce and Juli first meet, Juli knows its love. But Bryce isn't so sure. Girl-phobic and easily embarrassed, young Bryce does everything he can to keep his outspoken wannabe girlfriend at arm's length... for the next six years, which isn't easy since they go to the same school and live across the street from each other. But if Juli finally looks away, will it be Bryce's turn to be dazzled? "Flipped" takes Bryce and Juli from grade school to junior high; through triumph and disaster, family drama and first love, as they make the discoveries that will define who they are - and who they are to each other. PG 90 minutes. Two and a half stars

Animal Kingdom **
Despite being no saint herself, seventeen year old Joshua "J" Cody's mother shielded her son from her Melbourne-based criminal relatives who they have not seen in years. After J's mother dies from a self-inflicted heroin overdose, J, who is slightly detached from life, feels he has no choice but to contact his maternal grandmother, Janine "Smurf" Cody, the family matriarch, for a place to live. Smurf rules the family with a borderline incestuous love over her three sons, the quietly menacing Andrew "Pope" Cody, the hyperactive Craig Cody, and the barely of age Darren Cody. Pope and his best friend, Barry "Baz" Brown, are armed robbers, with Darren their up and coming apprentice, while Craig is a mid level drug dealer. Melbourne's Armed Robbery Squad is after specifically Pope, who is hiding out. But when the standoff between the Codys and the Armed Robbery Squad is brought up a notch, an all out war ensues, with some casualties and J caught in the middle. The only grounding in J's life is his girlfriend, Nicky Henry. With those casualties comes an investigation by Homicide Detective Senior Sergeant Nathan Leckie, who knows the Codys are involved. As Leckie tries to get J on his side, J has to figure out how best to get himself out from the middle, where he trusts neither side. J also wants to figure out how to exact what he considers justice in an all around bad situation. R 1 hour 52 minutes. Two stars
