Restaurant Review: SALT 7 – PRIME STEAKS AND SUSHI! By Mark Kent

Located at 32 SE 2nd Avenue in Delray Beach (274-7258), this two year old modern bistro is open all 7 days. Hours are 3PM to 11PM from Sunday through Tuesday and until 2AM from Wednesday through Saturday. Seating 117 inside and 45 on patio, they have an eclectic dining menu.

Some 10 appetizers are listed and we tasted the fine Chef’s daily Ceviche, a cool treat! Chef’s version of Oysters Rockefeller is smoked bacon cubes, string spinach with roasted garlic, pernod and hollandaise overwhelming a cool oyster. His Calamari rings were tender and tasty with a sweet but very spicy chili sauce for too much bite. A spicy Lobster was tempura battered and, as before, tossed with a tasty, yet spicy, spicy sriracha mayo dressing! None were memorable.

Turning to soups, the crab bisque was a bit sweet, the French Onion had a rich, yet thin salty broth and a crown of gruyere and Swiss. Unfortunately, the miso soup with its seaweed, tofu and green onion was quite thin and dull.

The Salt 7 house salad, sans lettuce, had very tasty mélange of tomato, feta, red onion, green peppers, cucumber and Kalamata olives – a good choice. The Caesar, however, had a too thin a dressing to be called a true Caesar.

The bone-in 17oz ribeye, cooked medium rare as ordered, was the finest…excellent, tender and flavorful- a best bet! The feature 8oz or 12oz filet mignons, 14oz or 20oz New York strips and pork chops as well as porterhouse at 27oz or…for two diners, 47oz.could not be sampled.

Chilean sea bass was tasty with its mango papaya pineapple chutney. The soft shell crab had vinegar slaw and their signature remoulade. Blackened grouper, skillet shrimp, seared tuna, salmon and a lobster and crab cake round out the ocean menu.

Try the chicken Lia- marinated. For 24 hours in a citrus/herb mixture, served with an artichoke, mushroom, caper mélange and mashed potatoes. The Soda-pop skirt steak was only average. We asked for the beef ribs but they were not forthcoming.

We sampled several Sashimi pieces – they were fresh and cold. There are 13 specialty rolls listed as well.

Salt 7 has an extensive wine, beer and cocktail list- pricing seems reasonable.

There is excellent service…from Restaurant Manager Donnie Petullo to Marketing Coordinator Kyle Gonzales to server Jeff!

Office Depot Inc. has named Roland Smith, a former supermarket executive, as the chairman and CEO of its newly merged company, effective immediately and both former CEO’s Neil Austrian from Office Depot and Ravi Saligram from Office Max, have resigned as CEO’s and from the board.
Boca resident David Silvers will run against State Rep. Bill Hager for a Florida House seat.

In the aftermath of a devastating 400,000 cancelations of Florida residents’ individual health care policies, President Obama is being blasted for his numerous promises that people could keep their health care plan and doctors under the Affordable Health Care Act, which critics are finally calling blatant lies. The President is also being taken to task for promising families could save $2500 a year under the new law, which is also not true.
Come Jan. 1, South Florida homeowners will get shafted once again by state-owned Citizens Property Insurance in an effort to slash its numbers of customers, giving many policy holders no choice, forcing them into private insurers that are new, untried and untested. Consumers are screaming foul as they would rather do business with the devil they know than with the devil they don’t know.
In a related matter, South Florida homeowners forced to buy coverage from private insurance could be facing a hike in premiums, reduced coverage and high deductibles. Most of the companies taking over Citizens’ policies have never weathered a hurricane and 6 of the 29 private companies at one time endorsed by the state have gone belly up. Citizens currently serves 133,000 policy holders in Palm Beach County.

SUPERIOR DINING AT OUT OF DENMARK! by Mark Kent

SUPERIOR DINING AT OUT OF DENMARK!

Originated in 1993, reborn in 2013, the Danish delight is open 6 days (closed Mondays) from 5PM to 10PM and serves outstanding Northern European cuisine. Come to 2275 South Federal Highway in Delray Plaza, Delray Beach (561-276-2242).

Start with a traditional “Koldt Board”- actually a multi-tier selection of typical appetizers as follows:
Fine Grav Lax Salmon with honey mustard on flatbread.
A deviled egg topped with a caviar pearl.
Great pickled sea herring-sweet tasting in tomato/sherry sauce.
A Tasty warm spinach dip with Danish blue cheese.
Chilled marinated petit mushrooms with Dijon mustard+ thyme.
Deep flavor whole petit pickled beets – tangy.
Fresh dill flavored European cucumber salad- cool.
Rich Madras curry sliced boneless chicken-fantastic taste.

Sampling all of the above gave this reviewer and guest a wonderful tour of outstanding North European tastes done to perfection.

We had a thick yellow split pea soup, superior taste with tender bits of carrot- deliciously filling. We sampled their Caesar salad but found it quite dull, even asking for anchovies did not give it life. When informed, we were told that Chef Christian was aware of its shortcoming and plan to revise the dressing. Thank you, Chef!
The roast half duck, crisp and with superior duck meat as fine as we ever had. It was served with an excellent sweet and sour red cabbage, smooth mashed potatoes, haricot vert green beans and carrot spears in a great, light berry sauce! Tournedos Béarnaise- available in one or two 4 oz. center cut
Beef tenderloins-done, as requested medium/well-with asparagus, mushrooms, delicious in the rich sauce. We did have the opportunity to taste an old favorite, beef tongue with spinach and mushrooms. Make no mistake…this is nothing like Deli tongue but it rich and soft to the palate with succulent taste. Do try it!

Others entrees include brisket of beef, Chicken Raspberry, calves sweetbreads, Wienerschnitzel, meat loaf, Veal Cutlet Oscar, baby calves liver and 4 or 8 chops rack of lamb.
All portions of entrees are man-size and most attractively presented by the charming and helpful wait staff.

Two desserts- Belgian chocolate cake, then Danish Layer cake – sweet, sweet endings to our fine dining experience.

We noted an excellent wine list with quite reasonable pricing for a world wide selection.

The Out of Denmark set menu will change seasonally, Chef’s specials above and their every dish is made fresh every day to our delight.
To welcome Out of Denmark back, we suggest you…Go and Enjoy!
