    As a result of legislation passed by Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-21), on March 18, 2014 President Obama will award Medals of Honor posthumously to 21 veterans, including Private First Class Leonard Kravitz.
  Former Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art Executive Director, Irvin Lippman has been named interim director of the Boca Museum of Art to lead a search committee for a permanent replacement of Steven Maklanksky who resigned in January.
   Boca Raton Airport Authority will consider having U.S. Customs at the airport following a submitted report which will boost the local economy.
   The U.S. House is stalling a delay in the huge rate hike of the national flood insurance program. The Senate passed the bill blessing a four year delay in the giant premium increases but the House has yet to act causing much concern among South Florida Realtors claiming the large premium hikes will destabilize the market, with more than 5,000 homeowners affected by the steep premium increases.
    NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell refused a contract renewal paycheck of an eye-popping $44 million this year, with the insanity that the NFL is designated as a non-profit company which grossed $11 billion last year. As a non-profit, every major assessment the Miami Dolphins and the other 39 teams pay to the league is considered a write-off as a donation for tax purposes.
    Watch for South Florida airlines to hike fares due to the bitter cold and ice storms up north causing massive cancellations, losing millions of dollars in revenue and huge deicing bills of $5,000 per aircraft.
   Palm Beach County had almost 6 million tourism visitors last year, up 3%, with 94.7 million total visitors, a record for the year.
   Florida lottery sales totaled $4 billion last year, with scratch off sales reaching $78.5 million last week, breaking previous record sales by $5 million. The spike in sales was due to a flood of highly publicized million dollar winners. Scratch off tickets reflect 58% of lottery sales, with 21 games selling over $1 million in tickets last week. South Florida leads the state and is the hotbed of lottery sales.

   FAU’s new president John Kelly starts March with a $400,000 annual salary and $40,000 signing bonus as part of a 5 year contract, plus $60k retirement.

   Four New playing fields are in the works for the Spanish River Athletic Facilities at 228 acre de Hoernle Park, 1000 NW Spanish River Blvd which already has 8 fields. Phase II will also include one field building and restrooms, bleachers and related amenities. Two fields will be oversize and two regular size.
    Boca Raton former hedge fund manager Matt Martoma was found guilty of federal insider trading charges, which benefited his company for $276 million. The Feds have pressured Martoma to rat out his boss, hedge fund manager Steve Cohen in a plea deal, but Martoma made an ill fated choice to stand trial despite considerable evidence against him and now faces 10 years in the slammer.
    The state DOT is setting aside $18.6 million for improvements to SR 7 (U.S. 441) between Glades Road and  Sample Road in Broward County.
   Comcast will shell out $45 billion to take over Time Warner and the merger will mean Comcast’s 1.2 million South Florida customers will be clobbered with substantial rate hikes to pay for the deal.           
     The White House came up with its 18th revision of the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare that allows businesses with 50 or more employees off the hook until 2016 for providing health insurance for workers or pay a penalty, with critics calling the delay a blatant political move to take the heat off Democrats supporting the unpopular law in the fall elections.
     South Florida law schools churning out lawyers are charging a bundle with no guarantee of a job after graduation or passing the bar. University of Miami nailed students for almost $44,000 a year, University of Florida $22,000, Florida State $21,000 and Nova Southeastern $35,000 with out of state students pay about double the state rates for public schools. UM tops the enrollment with 1307 students.

     Winter Haven based CenterState Bank bought Boca based Florida Southern Bank for $190 million, after buying Gulfstream business bank for $77 million. Florida Southern has 17 branches in Florida with 6 in South Florida and $482 million in deposits. 
     Congress cut $8 billion from Food Stamps, affecting one million in South Florida, and 190,000 in Palm Beach County, amounting to $90 per month. 
     The embattled Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, has become another nightmare for South Florida’s 22% Hispanic population with only 1% currently enrolled. The long delayed Spanish language website is plagued with missed translations, technical errors and filled with roadblocks for Latinos attempting to enroll in the program, with the most affordable plans often excluding Hispanic doctors.
