      Boca Raton penny stock trader John Rizzo faces criminal charges in a stock scam that bilked investors for $3 million, accused of running a boiler room and diverting money to off shore accounts in the British Virgin Islands and has copped a guilty plea in another stock scam in California.

  Boca Raton attorney Timothy McCabe was permanently disbarred by the Florida Supreme Court and is in jail without bond, awaiting trial on charges he stole more than $3.6 million from clients with auditors indicating as much as $8 million of client’s money may be missing from trust accounts.

   The 99,983 sq. ft. with a 46,464 sq. ft. parking garage Compson Financial Center, built on 4.4 acres in 1986 at 980 N. Federal Highway in Boca, was sold at a 45 percent discount to its foreclosed mortgage (CMBS Trust) to a local investor, Boca East Investments LLC.

   A South Florida jury has found a tobacco company partly responsible for a smoker's death and awarded $37.5 million to the woman's surviving family. It was a case that revealed the heartbreaking loss of a young mother in such detail that at times jurors and courtroom observers were moved to tears. The jury awarded plaintiffs $15 million in compensatory damages for Laura Grossman's husband, Jan, and two children, and $22.5 million in punitive damages against R.J. Reynolds Company.   The Federal Housing Administration is set to tighten reverse mortgage requirements for seniors applying for loans.     Palm Beach County approved throwing good money after bad, adding 10 more red light traffic cameras for more revenue, despite losing money on the existing cameras. The violations cost motorists $158 and the taxpayers payover $500,000 for the cameras, which critics call a blatant money grab.

    South Florida’s population is 5.6 million and a workforce of 2.9 million, with an estimated 350,000 illegal aliens.

    Florida's insurance officials said that health insurance rates will rise 5 to 20% for small businesses and 30 to 40% in the individual market through the state's new exchange under the federal health law.

     Restaurants and fast food outlets are converting employees to part time and looking at an employment maneuver called workaround to share employees who work less than 30 hours a week, to provide health coverage and avoid being hit with penalties due to the high cost of Obama care.

     The SEC is looking into bribery allegations of the Miami Marlins stadium deal and misleading investors in a major bond issue used to build the stadium.

Palm Beach single family home median price was $263,000 up 29% from the same period of May last year and investors buying bank owned properties.    

    Palm Beach County's median price of existing homes rose to $259,990 in June, 16 percent higher than a year ago. It was the first time since November that the median failed to increase by at least 20 percent. Sales were strong last month, with 1,494 homes changing hands, up 11 percent from June 2012.

    The Palm Beach Post reported home buyers may be overpaying for title insurance. The state last set rates 21 years ago and the tab on a $200,000 home is $2100, compared to $1400 in Georgia.      The Levis Jewish Community Center has 14 months to raise $1 million and recruit at least 500 host families and 250 volunteers initially after being tapped to host the JCC Maccabi Games from Aug. 10 to 15. The West Boca-based center of Jewish activity for south county expects at least 1,000 visiting Jewish athletes ages 12 to 16 from the U.S., Israel and other countries; 1,500 visiting families and at least 200 coaches, plus their own local team, almost like a replay of the Presidential debate at Lynn University.   The merger of Office Max and Office Depot will set off a bidding war between Florida and Illinois over where the headquarters will be located. Office Depot has already received $3.5 million from the state in job incentives plus $650,000 in tax breaks.
