A skateboard, BMX bike and online skate parks are being proposed for the unused roller hockey rink in Loggers Run Park. Funds are needed to finish the improvements to open it.
Former Congressman Peter Deutsch is opening one of his Ben Gamia Hebrew language charter schools on the Temple Beth El campus in East Boca, which is not a religious school like Donna Klein, replacing the vacant day care center which moved to the Beck Family Campus in West Boca.
The 73,803 square foot Courtyard office building, built in 1983 with an atrium, indoor fountains, ponds and tropical walkways, at 5301 N. Federal Highway in Boca Raton, was hit by a $5million foreclosure lawsuit.
The co-sponsors of a bill that would bring destination casinos to South Florida are proposing significant changes, including measures that could turn existing pari-mutuels like racetracks and jai-alai frontons into full-fledged casinos. What about Palm Beach County?
With new construction at a crawl, you could almost hear a collective sigh of relief when the first approvals for a proposed rental apartment complex downtown cleared hurdles to allow the project to move forward. The 2.21-acre lot between Southeast First and Second streets and Dixie and Federal highways is empty now. But if all the permits fall into place, a building large enough for 261 apartments with an eight-story garage eventually will help populate the area with pedestrians, a city goal after spending millions to revamp the downtown.
With completion scheduled for the end of January, it was about time to let the city's Recreation Services department look for outside companies to maintain the Spanish River Sports Complex. The city got the go-ahead to put out a request for proposals. The Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District is building the park and wants to see if money can be saved by contracting out the services instead of the city.

The federal government denied Florida's request for relief from a provision of the federal health care law that requires insurers spend at least 80 cents of every premium dollar on direct patient care. Consumer groups say large numbers of insured Floridians stand to get some of their premium payments back.
Morton’s Restaurants, with 77 steakhouses in 64 cities worldwide and operates Trevi, an Italian restuaurant at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, has been acquired by Landry’s Inc. for $116.6 million. Landry also owns McCormick and Schmicks, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company and Rainforest Café.
Boca Raton Attorney Mitchell Jay Stein was charged with leading a multimillion-dollar penny stock fraud at a medical device company. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Boca Raton reversed its decision and now will allow holiday decorations and symbols in all city buildings. Meanwhile, despite the Grinch antics of some of his neighbors turning on sprinklers spraying passerbys, Rick Newman, who puts on two holiday sound and light displays on his lawn at 699 NW Ninth Ave. in Old Floresta every year, is planning big doings on Christmas Eve. The Doral Middle School Choir will be here singing Christmas and Kwanzaa songs. The DocMiami International Film Festival is donating 20 gallons of eggnog for me to give out. The Holiday Light & Sound Show will start at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve and Santa is expected to arrive at 7. As he does every year, Newman collects money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and Rachel Elander and Lauren Wulf, aka "The Hot Chocolate Girls," sell hot chocolate and popcorn with proceeds going to the charity. Last year Newman presented a check for about $1,200, collected at both his Halloween and holiday displays.
Despite the city issuing RFP’s for restaurants only on the Wildflower site, Boca developer and downtown landowner, Jim Batmasian presented a plan for apartments and park on the site. The city would have to expand the RFP to include residential when they issue the request in January.

Florida Governor Rick Scott and Florida Senator Maria Sachs return today from a week long trade mission to Israel. They were joined by Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolus and others.
Sunrise Park Elementary School won $1,000 from the Miami Dolphins in a poster contest.
Palm Beach County Commissioners finally put the nail in the coffin for the needless proposal to widen Palmettto Park Road, just to shave off 20 seconds of driving time. Kudos to the Boca City Council for seeing the folly of this waste of taxpayer money and lobbied against it.
Palm Beach County Commissioner Burt Aaronson and SouthTech Academy Jim Kidd will meet with the Rosen School of Hospitality in January to establish a Hotel Management program.
A totally redesigned upscale iPic Theater with an indoor box office, a new façade facing Federal Highway and a bar and restaurant in the former AMC and Sunrise Theatre location at the south side of Mizner Park, is planned to be open by May by Muvico founder Hamid Hashami with an additional 1932 square feet, to be reconfigures with only 40 to 60 seats in each of eight spaces,, with the luxury section featuring push-button recliners and food service 20 minutes into the feature. Patrons in the lower priced up front leather seats can buy food and bring it into the theatreThe former Sunrise Cinemas location closed last winter, and an eviction lawsuit was filed in March. The new movie house will be reconfigured with only 40 to 60 seats in each of eight spaces. The luxury section has push-button recliners and allows food service 20 minutes into the feature. The lower-priced seats up front are leather, and movie goers can buy food there and bring it in while they watch. The box office will move inside, but patrons can also buy tickets and pick their seats in advance online. Hashemi formed iPic in 2007, which now has eight locations in Arizona, California, Illinois, Washington, Wisconsin and Texas, in addition to Boca Raton Florida in Mizner Park.
The city of Boca Raton showed a piece of steel from the World Trade Center it managed to claim that may be one of the last distributed by the 9/11 Foundation. It will be on display in the city's Fire Administration Headquarters by mid-January after a memorial featuring the piece of metal is complete. The steel is roughly 10-inches wide by 14-inches long. The city applied for the piece about a year ago and was initially told none was left.
An outdoor stage at the courtyard fountain at the Boca Marriott was approved for a fundraiser.

Congressman Allen West (R-FL) has been named a member of the National Defense Authorization Act Conference. The NDAA Conference is a select group of bipartisan members from both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U. S. Senate that will begin hammering out the final provisions of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012. NDAA legislation provides the policy for the Department of Defense and Americas Armed Services and ensures troops have the resources they need to defend America.
The pool at Boca High is now available for lease when not used by the school students.
