BI-VALVE BLISS AND MORE AT MUSSEL BEACH RESTAURANT

Chef/Owners Pattie and Mark Mezzancello have created a faultless Bistro dedicated to presenting 13 ways to prepare P.E.I. plump mussels.

The standard menu begins with 7 appetizers – we sampled 5…a crab cake (all meat, no filler) with a horseradish mustard and ginger soy sauce, then red and golden roasted beet slices topped with a terrific goat cheese fritter, pistachios in a balsamic reduction. Plan on ordering clams casino, pancetta, diced peppers and onions in a shell with parmesan and garlic as a rough-cut filling. A superior, tasty, textured seafood bisque, featured brandy and sherry plus tomatoes and cream. Outstanding. We hadn’t experienced baked kale – a dry, flaky item with olive oil, sea salt and ground pepper- unusual but a popular dish here.

Mussels- each a serving of 1 ½ pounds of fresh Prince Edward Island’s plump gems are flavor infused by their complex ingredients and broths. Mussel Beach boasts 14 variations on the theme- we sampled six!
Mariniere style featured shallots, garlic, onion, white wine and butter. Prosciutto style had caramelized onions, white wine, garlic and cream, while the French Onion version had baked caramelized onions, Dijon mustard and corn bread. The Italian offering had squid, fresh fish, a red wine tomato sauce featuring roasted garlic and basil. Lobster bisque style had rich tomato while the Thai version had a very pungent curry coconut base with lemongrass, garlic, ginger and jalapenos! We found each and every one to be a treasure treat!

Four salads are presented. The Ahi Tuna with its cabbage, Lo Mein noodles and wasabi in a ginger soy vinaigrette was excellent. The listed Caesar, with kale, romaine, croutons and parmesan cheese had a key lime Caesar dressing that, while tasty, is nowhere near a true Caesar – mia culpa! We’ll try both the Malibu and Mandarin versions another day.

The seven seafood items included the fine Ahi Tuna, a grouper, a Mahi Oscar style, plump sea scallops (perfectly prepared) and a delightful pretzel encrusted Scottish salmon – a winner! Also, try “The Kettle” with king crab legs, mussels, shrimp, scallops, clams, chorizo, corn, red potatoes in garlic wine sauce.

A couple of “Besides Seafood” items are a Hawaiian Rib Eye and a Sticky Glazed Chicken. For somewhat lighter fare choose from five sandwiches, all served with “Beach Fries”.

FYI- Mussel Beach offers a full bar service, 24 white and 17 red wines plus 4 sparkling, by glass and bottle. 7 martinis and 6 other cocktails are listed as are a dozen beers.

Audrey, Joanne, Barry and this reviewer ended our dining with samples of Mussel Beach’s desserts. The dark chocolate mousse with fresh strawberries, salted caramel and whipped cream was followed by a white chocolate bread pudding with a berry compote. Tried “Crack Pie” – an oatmeal pie with vanilla bean ice cream. Finally, tiny doughnut balls fried with amaretto, cinnamon, sugar and crème anglaise. A very sweet way to end a fabulous dining experience.

Mussel Beach Restaurant is located at 501 East Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach (561-921-6464) and is open 7 days. Try luncheon/dinner from 11:30AM to 10PM on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and until midnight thereafter. In addition to the standard menu, there are Chef specials and a kids menu. Established in January of 2014, they seat 102 diners inside and 25 on the patio. We suggest that you…Go and Enjoy!

NEW AMERICAN CUISINE SHINES AT 13 AMERICAN TABLE

Owner Alberto “Tucci” Aletto, Chef Anthony Fiorini and a most attentive and knowledgeable staff preside over a noisy, friendly, busy bistro at 451 E. Palmetto Park Road in Boca Raton (561-409-2061).

Barry, with Audrey and Marc sampled a very creative menu, starting with the “Shared Plates” roster. We had the family eggplant; a sweet, soft and superior dish with burrata/crostini and basil. A large portion of a fine BBQ pork belly with a tangy vinegar slaw was followed by a Florida grouper ceviche that had quite a spicy taste of avocado emulsion, grilled corn, tomato, chili and red onion plus lime, cilantro and yucca chips – cool!

FYI – we were shown the restaurant “Josper”, a Spanish multi-tiered grill that imparts a touch of smoke to such foods as the Josper grilled sausage…hearty and delicious and accompanied by a pickled veg salad and whole grain mustard aioli. Josper fired clams had a spicy coconut curry broth, laced with chili, mushrooms, cilantro and lime. Five other dishes complete this portion of the menu.

Titled “Off The Josper”, 7 dishes are offered. We selected an 8 oz. bavette steak, a fine cut which we had divided in half to cook both very- rare and medium versions. Other beef items are a 6 oz. filet and a 16 oz. bone in rib eye. A 12 oz. pork chop, a half chicken, marinated gulf shrimp and seasonal fish complete the listing.
Side dishes are large portions, including our tasting of an excellent corn off the cob with chili aioli, queso fresco, cilantro and lime! The sautéed mushrooms with shallots, thyme and sherry wine were tasty, firm (not rubbery) and delicious. We found the sautéed spinach to be only fair- taste accented the acrid iron within the leaves.

Of the salads listed, we chose their perfect Caesar…shards of romaine in a superior dressing to which we added fine white anchovies.

5 “Sang Wich” offerings included fried mortadella on a roll with provolone, arugula in mustard aioli – a giant tasty treat! All sang wiches come with delicious house fries.

4 desserts, that vary, featured a sweet layered brownie and…a favorite…Rocky Road bread pudding – don’t miss it!

The Chef’s specials change daily – ask your server.

13 American Table offers 16 white and 27 red wines-many by glass as well as bottle. 7 craft cocktails and almost 30 beers are on the menu for your enjoyment.

Established in 2013, this bistro seats 40 inside and another 40 on patio. Open from Monday through Thursday, 5 PM to 10 PM, Friday and Saturday until 11 PM – this is a bright, creative bistro – we suggest that you – Go and Enjoy!

FINE FOOD AT BURT AND MAX’S IN DELRAY MARKETPLACE

Audrey, Joanne, Barry and this reviewer traveled to 9089 West Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach and we were rewarded with testing excellent Contemporary American foods.

Tasty, complimentary mini corn breads were initially served. The standard dinner menu commenced with a roster of 11 appetizers. We had delicious short rib empanadas with Manchego cheese, heirloom tomato salsa and Aji crema – rich and flavorful. A unique dish of “onion soup” dumplings containing gruyere cheese and chives was applauded as was a basket of crispy calamari rings and zucchini chips with both pomodoro and tartar sauces, then lettuce wraps with shrimp, cellophane noodles, bell peppers, carrots, crushed peanuts and bib lettuce with a tasty peanut-lime dipping sauce – cool and crisp!

Under the heading of “Soups and Salads”, we delighted in the roasted tomato soup- then, this daily special of a superb mushroom soup…chock full of small mushrooms caps. The treatment of Caesar salad was a crisp portion of romaine, padano plus piquillo pepper bits, garlic and herb croutons in a very simple dressing. If you like the taste of anchovy, ask your server and receive several fresh anchovy samples to add to the fine salad. We enjoyed the salad of roasted golden and red beets with goat cheese, toasted pistachios plus radicchio and arugula greens. We also tried the Max’s Classic chopped salad – a complex mix of nine ingredients in a red wine vinaigrette – very interesting. A house salad, cobb salad, BLT wedge and tuna tartami complete the list.

We viewed the menu of 13 “Large Plates” and chose to taste the oak grilled Rainbow Trout, quite sweet to the taste…then the Branzino – a Mediterranean special fish, done to perfection – both are winners! The slow braised beef short ribs with vegetables accompaniment is a rich, robust meal in itself. Salmon, fish tacos, crab cakes, roast chicken and meatloaf are among the other choices listed.

The “Vegetable Sides” offered include fine wood roasted mushrooms, tender and tasty. The Brussels sprouts and the served broccoli are a bit too al dente. Sautéed spinach is a good bet as is the Yukon gold mashed potatoes.

Note the standard menu features five jumbo sandwich choices as well six wood fired pizza selections – all for us to try another visit. In addition there are 8 dishes listed a “Eat Well, Be Well”… heart healthy choices.

A rather extensive “Kids Menu” covers 6 entrees plus ice cream desserts.

There are a half dozen or so of their chef’s specials – changed daily. This visit we sampled a perfect strip steak, done medium rare, then Burt and Max’s version of paella – shrimp, clams, mussels plus fish and scallops – a nice dish but what we found lacking was the golden, tangy use of saffron that enriches  both the rice and the broth.

There are 7 dessert offerings – we tried 3. The season cobbler (apple) was sweet and tangy, the warm chocolate bomb was rich, molten and superior while their mixed berry crème Brule pie – was unusually different and quite tasty.

Restauranteur Burt Rappoport, General Manager and Steve Mann lead a staff of well trained and knowledgeable people – we found our server, Randy, to be exemplary.

There is a full bar, 7 champagnes and sparkling choices, 30 white and 39 red wines, by both glass and bottle. A dozen specialty drinks and twenty select bottled beers plus six bottled sodas are listed.

This bustling Bistro seats 150 inside, another 100 on the patio and is open 7 days. Monday through Thursday from 11:30AM to 10PM, Friday and Saturday until 11PM and Sunday from 11AN to 10 PM. Call 561-638-6380 for reservations. Burt and Max’s is a winner – suggest you …Go and Enjoy!
