   Word on the street is that private equity investment giant Blackstone group is hanging out the For Sale sign on the Boca Resort Hotel and Club along with other properties, including Pier 66 and the Naples Grande on the sales block. Blackstone bought the Resort package from Wayne Huizenga seven years ago for $1 billion, and is already unloading two hotel chains for $7 billion.
  Florida Atlantic University leaders are considering the construction of a hotel/conference center on the school's Boca Raton campus through a public-private partnership. Plans for the $45 million hotel project call for 200 rooms in 250,000 square feet, including conference facilities and retail. FAU would lease land on its campus to the private developer, who would build and operate it.
    The Cumberland Farms gas station at Sandalfoot and 441 has closed and there is fenced in construction underway.
   Internet provider OMGFast has pulled out of the south county market, leaving thousands of customers with unusable antennas on their roofs.
   Mortgage risk analysis firm Digital Risk Services will be laying off 56 full-time employees at its facility in Boca Raton as of Aug.30.

  The Orlando Sentinel reported that major South Florida companies have stashed millions in overseas accounts to avoid paying U.S. taxes on profits including Boca based Office Depot having $451 million in foreign accounts, 42% in cash and Boca based private prison operator GEO Corporation owns $24 million in off shore accounts BE Aerospace in Wellington has $500,000 in foreign profits, 55% held in cash.
    South Florida home owners will not get a price break on property premiums despite insurers seeing reinsurance rates falling 20%. State owned Citizens Property Insurance has already bought premiums for 8% after stashing millions in lower cost re-insurance rates with critics pointing out that insurers waste no time hiking rates when the insurance costs rise, but stall when prices fall.
   The Black Diamond day trip gambling ship out of the Port of Palm Beach will be re-launched in late October as the Island Breeze after $5 million in renovations which formerly sailed under the SunCruz banner, and 180 jobs will be created with the launch.
    The 10,000 Home Owners Associations in South Florida which yield considerable influence over their neighbors now have tougher requirements for board members which must be certified, show transparency with financial information and ban any board member with a felony record.

      Boca Raton penny stock trader John Rizzo faces criminal charges in a stock scam that bilked investors for $3 million, accused of running a boiler room and diverting money to off shore accounts in the British Virgin Islands and has copped a guilty plea in another stock scam in California.
  Boca Raton attorney Timothy McCabe was permanently disbarred by the Florida Supreme Court and is in jail without bond, awaiting trial on charges he stole more than $3.6 million from clients with auditors indicating as much as $8 million of client’s money may be missing from trust accounts.
   The 99,983 sq. ft. with a 46,464 sq. ft. parking garage Compson Financial Center, built on 4.4 acres in 1986 at 980 N. Federal Highway in Boca, was sold at a 45 percent discount to its foreclosed mortgage (CMBS Trust) to a local investor, Boca East Investments LLC.
   The Office Depot/Office Max CEO search committee has narrowed the list to five with Office Max CEO Ravi Saligram said to be the front runner.
 The Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District commissioners agreed to up their share of beach re-nourishment projects as needed from 33.5 percent to 50 percent in their new proposed budget, contingent on an agreement with the city to include phase II for Spanish River Sports Complex.   
   A clock tower is being built at the Intracoastal waterway Palmetto Park Road bridge, visible to east and west traffic.

   Congress has exempted itself and staffers from Obamacare after ramming the law through that forces taxpayers to buy insurance or pay a penalty.
   As growth slowed due to the recession, Florida’s population grew 500 people a day and 180,000 last year with 1/3, 60,000 to South Florida, an increase of 3% in the 2010-2013 period, which is currently pegged at 5.2 million and 19.2 million statewide, plus over 200,000 illegals evading the count.

   A South Florida jury has found a tobacco company partly responsible for a smoker's death and awarded $37.5 million to the woman's surviving family. It was a case that revealed the heartbreaking loss of a young mother in such detail that at times jurors and courtroom observers were moved to tears. The jury awarded plaintiffs $15 million in compensatory damages for Laura Grossman's husband, Jan, and two children, and $22.5 million in punitive damages against R.J. Reynolds Company.   The Unicorn Children's Foundation raised $500,000 to open the new Unicorn Village Academy Charter High School on the second floor of the former sports and wellness center in the Levis Jewish Community Center, serving students with autism and learning differences, including attention deficit.

  The Federal Housing Administration is set to tighten reverse mortgage requirements for seniors applying for loans. South Florida is the hotbed for reverse mortgage marketing and it is also become the leading market for loan default. The Feds, which insure the loans, are stepping up requirements so senior borrowers have enough cash flow after insurance and taxes to avoid foreclosure, which has become a big problem in South Florida.
   Giant hedge fund SAC Capital has been indicted by the Feds on numerous criminal charges of insider trading. Boca Raton former SAC portfolio manager Matt Martoma was already busted by the FBI last December and charged with insider trading. Boca Raton winter resident and SAC Capital founder Steve Cohen was not charged in the indictment.
